Not every family law matter requires full legal representation from start to finish — and for many clients, full representation is simply not financially feasible. Limited scope legal services, also known as unbundled legal services, allow you to retain a family lawyer for specific, defined tasks rather than having them manage your entire matter.

At Soica & Associates, we offer tailored limited scope retainers that give you access to experienced family law advice and document support for exactly the parts of your matter where professional help matters most.

Traditional legal representation — sometimes called ‘full representation’ — involves a lawyer handling all aspects of your matter from the initial consultation to the final resolution. In a limited scope retainer, you and your lawyer agree in advance on the specific tasks the lawyer will perform. Everything else, you handle yourself.

Limited scope services are formally recognized in Ontario and are permitted under the Law Society of Ontario’s rules of professional conduct. This is not a lesser form of service — it is a tailored arrangement that puts you in control of both the legal process and your legal budget.

What Services Can Be Provided on a Limited Scope Basis?

Our Toronto family lawyers provide a range of limited scope services, including:

  • Legal advice. You handle your own negotiations or court appearances, and we provide confidential legal advice on your rights, options, and strategy before key steps. This is sometimes called ‘unbundled’ legal advice.
  • Document review. You have received a separation agreement, parenting plan, or court document from the other side — we review it, explain what it means, identify problematic terms, and advise you on how to respond. We are also available to review the materials for court drafted by you, providing you feedback and recommending changes.
  • Document drafting. We draft specific documents on your behalf — a separation agreement, parenting plan, court motion, or financial statement — while you handle other aspects of the matter.
  • Preparation for mediation. We prepare you for a mediation session — helping you understand the legal framework, clarify your goals, and identify your positions on each issue — without necessarily attending the mediation itself.
  • Court preparation and coaching. If you are representing yourself in family court as a self-represented litigant, we can prepare you for specific appearances, review your materials, and advise on procedure and strategy.
  • Independent legal advice (ILA) on agreements. We can provide a standalone ILA session reviewing a separation agreement, cohabitation agreement, or marriage contract you have already negotiated, without handling the broader matter.

Who Is a Limited Scope Retainer Right For?

Limited scope services work particularly well in the following circumstances:

  • Your matter is relatively straightforward. If you and your spouse broadly agree on most issues and just need documents properly drafted or reviewed, a limited scope arrangement can deliver everything you need at a fraction of the cost of full representation.
  • You are self-represented in court. If you have chosen to represent yourself as a self-represented litigant in family court proceedings, legal coaching and document review can significantly improve the quality of your court materials and your understanding of the process.
  • You need specific expert input on a high-stakes step. Some clients handle most of their matter independently but want professional input at a critical juncture — for example, reviewing a separation agreement before signing, or preparing for a settlement conference.
  • Budget is a primary concern. Limited scope services allow you to access qualified legal advice within a defined and predictable budget.

Limited scope services are generally not suitable for highly contested matters, situations involving domestic violence, or cases where a power imbalance makes self-representation risky. We will always be honest with you about whether a limited scope arrangement is appropriate for your circumstances — and when full representation is genuinely in your best interests.

How a Limited Scope Retainer Works at Soica & Associates

  • Initial consultation. We discuss your matter, identify where you need legal support, and determine whether a limited scope arrangement is appropriate.
  • Define the scope. We clearly document the specific tasks we will perform on your behalf and the tasks you will handle yourself. This prevents misunderstandings and keeps your costs predictable.
  • Perform the agreed services. We deliver exactly the services agreed upon — whether that is drafting documents, reviewing materials, providing legal advice, or coaching you through a specific step.
  • Adjust as needed. If your circumstances change and you need additional support — or full representation — we can adjust the scope of the retainer at any point.

What Clients Often Ask

What is unbundled legal services in Ontario?

Unbundled legal services — also called limited scope legal services — allow you to hire a family lawyer for specific tasks rather than full representation. You handle the rest of the matter yourself. The Law Society of Ontario formally recognizes and permits this arrangement. It is a practical and cost-effective option for clients who cannot afford full representation or who need expert help only at specific points in their matter.

Can a lawyer review a separation agreement I already signed?

Yes — we can review a separation agreement and provide you with a legal opinion. However, once you have signed, the options for changing the agreement are more limited. It is always better to get independent legal advice before signing. If you have already signed and have concerns, contact us for a consultation on your options.

Can I use limited scope services if I am going to court?

Yes. Many self-represented litigants in Ontario’s family courts use limited scope services for specific steps — preparing affidavits or court materials, receiving coaching before a court appearance, or getting advice on strategy without having a lawyer appear on their behalf. This can significantly improve both the quality of your court materials and your confidence in the process.

Is limited scope representation as good as full representation?

Limited scope representation is appropriate and effective for the right situations — simpler matters where the parties broadly agree, or situations where you need targeted expert input. It is not suitable for complex contested matters, situations involving domestic violence, or where there is a significant power imbalance. We always assess your situation honestly and tell you if full representation is genuinely in your best interest.
